first permanent English settlement was near Charleston, and the
sub-tropical weather and fertile soil attracted settlers from
many parts of Europe, establishing plantations of rice and
indigo throughout the coastal low country. The plantations
flourished due to slaves brought in from Africa to provide labor
(by 1720 they formed the majority of the population). As a
result, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies in the
New World by the time of the American Revolution.

property at Union Pier at $15 per day. Cash,
traveler’s checks and personal checks accepted.

FROM
SOUTH - Take I-95 North to I-26. At the
end of I-26 take Highway 17-North Get off on the
East Bay exit and make a right onto East Bay
Street. Turn left onto Calhoun then make a right
on Washington Street. Follow signs to terminal.
FROM
NORTH - Take I-95 South to I-26. At the
end of I-26 take Highway 17-North Get off on the
East Bay exit and make a right onto East Bay
Street. Turn left onto Calhoun then make a right
on Washington Street. Follow signs to terminal.
